Hugh Ramopolo Masekela was born on the 4 April 1931 in the South African mining town of Witbank. Musically talented from an early age, it was in 1954 that Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, founder of the Huddleston Jazz Band, made him a gift of his first trumpet.
